New York Red Bulls
TUCSON, AZ - The New York Red Bulls head into their third Tucson Desert Diamond Cup game tomorrow evening looking for a strong performance against defending MLS Cup Champion, the LA Galaxy.
New York is seeking its first win in the preseason tournament after falling to Real Salt Lake and the New England Revolution in the past week. However, head coach Hans Backe’s side will certainly be without Icelandic midfielder Victor Palsson, who has suffered a knee injury.
“I think hopefully it’s quite a soft injury,” Backe said. “It’s a small tear in his meniscus that will keep him out from, I would guess hopefully, maximum seven to 10 days.”
A pair of players who Backe does expect to feature tomorrow is defender Wilman Conde and midfielder Teemu Tainio. Conde has been making his return to match fitness over the past several weeks and earned his first minutes when he played the opening 35 in a 2-0 loss to New England last Saturday. Backe said that Conde will feature for the entire first half against LA and a decision will be made at halftime to see if he could play further.
As for Tainio, who was hampered with a calf injury a few weeks ago in Mexico, Backe expects the Finn to build on his 45-minute performance against Pumas in Phoenix last Thursday.
“He’s back. He was out for two weeks and you can see it. Every player missing two weeks, you’re perhaps not 100 percent sharp, but he has no pain…and that’s good and hopefully, he can do at least 60 minutes,” Backe said.
As opposed to the opening two matches where he used a younger lineup, Backe expects to field a more veteran side Wednesday night. The Red Bulls will also be missing the services of defenders Rafa Marquez (Mexico) and Roy Miller (Costa Rica), midfielder Joel Lindpere (Estonia) and forward Juan Agudelo (U.S. U-23 MNT) due to international duty.
We’ve reached the midway point of the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup, as the festivities in Arizona look to wrap up this weekend. The Red Bulls will aim to improve on their 0-2-0 tournament record when they take on the LA Galaxy Wednesday at 10pm ET, the first meeting of the two teams since the 2011 Conference Semifinals. It also marks the final qualifying match before Saturday’s Cup finale.
The Red Bulls came out of the previous preseason trip to Mexico with a 1-0-2 record thanks to a win over FC Dallas and consecutive draws against Merida and Tecos. Combine that with a loss to Real Salt Lake, a draw against Pumas and a loss to the Revolution on this trip, and it brings the overall preseason record to 1-2-3.
Los Angeles sits at 1-1-0 in the quest for the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup after the Revs dealt them a 3-2 loss in the first match. The Galaxy bounced back for a 2-0 win over RSL this past Saturday on goals from Paolo Cardozo and Mike Magee.
Similar to how the Red Bulls were without Captain Thierry Henry during the tour through Mexico – as he was, at the time, on loan to Arsenal – the Galaxy have been without the likes of forward Robbie Keane and midfielder Landon Donovan. Keane returned from his loan with Aston Villa this past weekend, while Donovan also recently returned state side from his second stint with Everton. However, Donovan remains unable to play due to a bout with bronchitis, as the illness forced the California native to withdraw from the U.S. roster ahead of Wednesday’s match against Italy.
Wednesday’s 10pm ET match between LA and New York will be available as a live stream on both MLSsoccer.com and NewYorkRedBulls.com. Depending on the outcome of the match, the Red Bulls will play their final game of the tournament Saturday at either 8pm ET or 10pm ET. No matter the time, the match will also be available as a live stream.
Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Revolution puts the Red Bulls at 0-2-0 in the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup Tournament and 1-2-3 overall during the 2012 preseason (Watch: Recap/Reactions).
The Red Bulls' next match is two days away when they take on the LA Galaxy in Game 3 of the tournament Wednesday at 10pm ET. A live stream of the match will once again be available on both MLSsoccer.com and right here on NewYorkRedBulls.com.
We'll have more updates surrounding the team's training in Arizona later, but until then check out these photos from the weekend's training session in Tucson:

After playing two games in three days, the team received a much-needed day off Friday as they traveled between Phoenix and Tucson. After two straight days of games, and another on tap Saturday against the New England Revolution (10pm ET, Live Stream will be available), the team is enjoying a little down time today while traveling between Phoenix and Tucson.
With that said, I figured now was a good time to take a look around the Red Bulls' system a bit for those keeping tabs on players in various academy and training programs.

Despite a number of scoring chances on both ends of the pitch, neither team could find the back of the net in Thursday's scoreless draw at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ. Kenny Cooper, Thierry Henry and Dane Richards showed flashes on offense around the Pumas goal but were unable to send one past either of the Pumas goalkeepers to steal the win. On the other end of the field, Red Bulls 'keeper Ryan Meara made a number of sprawling saves to keep the team within striking distance over the course of 90 minutes. You can read the full recap of the match here.
We'll have a video recap and highlights of the match on the way Friday afternoon. In the mean time, check out these photos:

- Midfielder Teemu Tainio, who was afflicted with a calf strain during the Mexico trip, is back training fully with the team.
- Look to start seeing more Red Bulls play 90 minutes in these preseason matches starting tonight with the season being less than three weeks away.
