Red Bull Weekly Update: May 10
RED BULLS HOST REVOLUTION IN OPEN CUP: The New York Red Bulls will look to advance in the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they host the New England Revolution in a Preliminary Round Match on Wednesday, May 12 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available for $15 apiece in the stadium’s 100-Level by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.
In their opening match of the 2010 competition, the Red Bulls defeated the Philadelphia Union 2-1 at Red Bull Arena on April 27. Rookie Conor Chinn scored both goals for New York. Chinn tallied in the 16th minute and added his second in the 41st minute, and the Red Bulls withstood Sebastien Le Toux’s second half goal to hold on for the victory.
This will be the first match of the 2010 tournament for the New England Revolution. The Revolution ahs won the competition once, taking home the title in 2007. In last season’s campaign, the Revolution were ousted, 2-1, in the Third Round by the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Second Division. In Major League Soccer regular season play thus far in 2010, the Revolution is fifth in the Eastern Conference on 7 points with a record of 2-5-1. In their last match, New England was defeated, 3-2, by the Columbus Crew on a late goal by Robbie Rogers.
Should the Red Bulls advance, they will host the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, May 26 at 8:00 PM at Red Bull Arena. The winner of that match would advance to the Open Cup’s main tournament field.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual national competition that is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest tournament in the United States, beginning in 1914 when the Brooklyn Field Club took home the very first title. MLS teams were first included in the tournament in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. The Red Bulls’ very best finish in the competition came in 2003 with New York falling, 1-0, to the Chicago Fire in the Final. New York dispatched three league opponents on its way to the finals.
After its win over Philadelphia on April 27, the Red Bulls improved their record against league opponents in the tournament to 8-7. All-time in the competition, New York has posted a record of 15-13. The Red Bulls last won two matches in one Open Cup season in 2003, when they reached the Final.
RED BULLS FALL TO EARTHQUAKES: Last Saturday, the Red Bulls had a three-game winning streak snapped, falling to the San Jose Earthquakes by a 4-0 score at Buck Shaw Stadium in San Jose. New York was reduced to 10 men when fullback Luke Sassano was sent off in the 13th minute for a reckless challenge on Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey. The Earthquakes opened the scoring just before halftime. Convey sent a cross from the left side into the box that San Jose forward Ryan Johnson was able to get on the end of. Johnson beat New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul on his first touch, slotting the ball underneath the keeper into the net.
In the 54th minute, midfielder Joey Gjertsen doubled the San Jose lead with a low drive that found its way under the arms of Coundoul. Earthquakes leading scorer Chris Wondolowksi added his fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute, finishing off a cross from Ramiro Corrales. The ‘Quakes added one for good measure through Bobby Burling, who headed home a Convey corner kick in the 85th minute.

In their last match on Saturday May 8, the Sounders were defeated 4-0 by the league-leading Los Angeles Galaxy at Qwest Field in Seattle. Galaxy captain Landon Donovan set up three of the Galaxy’s goals and scored the other, handing the Sounders their worst home loss of their brief history. Second year forward Steve Zakuani leads the Sounders with three goals in 2010. Forward Fredy Montero has also added two goals and leads the team with three assists.
The Red Bulls are 1-1-1 all-time against the Sounders. On April 3, the Red Bulls defeated the Sounders 1-0 at Qwest Field. RED BULLS TEAM UP WITH NYPD FOR PERU TRIP: In the framework of the 'Soccer for children - Breaking Borders' program implemented by the New York Red Bulls in collaboration with the Police Department of New York City, a delegation from both entities will travel to Lima, Peru in the coming days in order to perform an annual soccer clinic and lead to economically disadvantaged children from different schools. The delegation will provide 150 soccer balls and sports clothing for over 1500 children. This grant will attempt to send, through the delegation of goodwill, a positive message to reflect that by way of sport, one can get a better life and that nothing is impossible with the joint efforts of both countries.
New York Red Bulls Senior Director of Communications and Hispanic Affairs Ernesto Motta, who will represent the Red Bulls in the delegation, said: "I am very excited about this project which began some time ago together with other leaders of football in the city of New York. This program has had great success in the past as we have travelled to countries like Ecuador and Colombia, which we visited last year. Our goal is to visit countries in South and Central America, conduct soccer clinics for needy children and hope that our modest donation may bring a positive message and is something very positive in their lives.”
Avianca's participation has been essential for the transport of the donations that have been made not only in Colombia, but in Peru this year. In selflessness and with great spirit of collaboration, its executives have always answered the call and have become mainstays of this campaign, which is expected to repeat year after year with the same success.
"After hearing about the program, created by the New York Red Bulls with the collaboration of the New York Police Department, Avianca joined this program, supporting their visit to Colombia, more specifically the ‘coffee belt’. We now continue with the journey that this group takes in Peru, and in conjunction with the organizers, we are finalizing details for the visit to the city of Cartagena, Colombia in 2011. Worthy campaigns are ones that should be supported unreservedly and that's why we joined in, providing Avianca luggage transport and logistics group connections when required,” said Jaime Londoño, Airport Director Avianca Bogota.
This trip will take place from May 18 through May 26, visiting the Peruvian capital of Lima and its surroundings. The delegation will have the opportunity to visit schools and orphanages in poor to implement the grants.
This major event also has the support of the Embassy of the United States of America in Lima, Peru, which has designated the locations most in need.
The soccer team of the Police of the City of New York will play several friendly matches to promote closer ties with their counterparts in Peru, and have received the idea with great enthusiasm, working hard to ensure that this campaign is successful.
"Once again we are excited to be part of this delegation and sharing with the Red Bulls this new experience to deliver a major donation. With great pride on behalf of our Police Department of the City of New York, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the children of Peru fully enjoy the clinics and the moments we are able to spend with them. It's nice to play in other countries representing our department, but more so giving them soccer balls and sports clothing for those in need, which makes our hearts full," said NYPD Lt. Ronald Mejia.
