ABOUT THE MATCH

Tied atop the Eastern Conference with nine matches remaining, the New York Red Bulls (11-8-6, 39 pts.) will look to stay in first place when they travel to the West Coast to take on CD Chivas USA on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 5:00 PM ET (TV: MSG, UniMas; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM).

The Red Bulls are coming off a scoreless 0-0 tie against the Philadelphia Union in front of a sold out crowd of 25,355 Saturday night at Red Bull Arena. Combined with Sporting KC’s 1-0 loss to San Jose on Sunday, the point was enough for New York to move into a first place tie with Sporting KC in the Eastern Conference. Both the Montreal Impact and Philadelphia Union have 38 points, just one shy of New York and Sporting KC, while fifth place Houston has earned 36 points. Despite the tie, New York is unbeaten in five of its last six matches and recorded its eighth shutout of 2013 in last Saturday’s match.
Chivas USA was not in action last weekend, but has two matches this week and first took on FC Dallas at the StubHub Center on Wednesday – a match it lost, 3-1. Bryan de la Fuente gave the hosts the lead in the 43rd minute, but FC Dallas was able to tally three second half goals to earn the victory. Currently ninth place in the Western Conference with 18 points and a 4-14-6 record, Chivas USA’s previous match was on Aug. 11 – a 1-1 tie at home against the Colorado Rapids. In a scrappy game, which saw two Chivas red cards, Carlos Alvarez found the back of the net in the fifth minute to help the hosts earn a point versus the Rapids.

New York is 4-5-6 all-time against Chivas USA. Last season, the teams tied 1-1 at Red Bull Arena on May 23, 2012. The Red Bulls are 1-2-4 all-time on the road versus their Western Conference foe.
