How Acquired: Signed on July 26, 2012 as a Designated Player
A two-time World Cup selection and English Premier League veteran, Cahill will look to continue making his mark in his first full season in Major League Soccer. He joined the Red Bulls in Summer 2012 following a successful eight-year stint at Everton FC. The Australian, who has featured both as a central attacking midfielder and forward during his career, amassed a total of 278 appearances for Everton, scoring 68 goals, and his renowned for his ability in the air. In addition, he was the first player in his country’s history to score in a World Cup, guiding his side to the Round of 16 in 2006.
PROFESSIONAL:
2013: Received his first assist of the season in New York's 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire on Apr. 7 when he helped set up a Jamison Olave bicycle finish. Picked up his second assist of the season during the Apr. 20 match against the Revolution when he settled down a loose ball for Dax McCarty, who buried a left-footed shot for his second tally of the year. Scored his first goal of the season in the 39th minute of New York's Apr. 27 meeting against Toronto FC after burying a left-footed shot off a Roy Miller cross. Fifty minutes later, Cahill buried the game-winner, to round out his first MLS brace in a 2-1 win over TFC. One week later, Cahill found the back of the net once again, scoring the lone goal in New York's 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew.
2012: Following his move to MLS, Cahill made his Red Bulls debut in an exhibition July 31 versus Tottenham at Red Bull Arena, earning a penalty kick that Kenny Cooper converted in a 2-1 loss. Made MLS debut Aug. 3 at Houston, playing full 90 minutes. Registered first two assists on Aug. 10 against Houston in 2-0 win. Scored first MLS goal on Aug. 19 in 3-2 over Portland at home. Wore Captain’s Armband at Sporting Kansas City Aug. 26. Made first playoff appearance on Nov. 3 at D.C. United and started in team’s two playoff games.
2011-12: Tallied a total of three goals and three assists in 41 total appearances for Everton.
2010-2011: Made 28 total appearances and scored nine goals and four assists in League play. Was third in goals in the club.
2009-10: Played in 43 games for Everton in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and six assists.
2008-09: Was the team’s leading scorer in the Premiership with eight goals in 30 appearances. Also added five assists. Helped team get to FA Cup Final, where they were runners-up to Chelsea.
2007-08: Had a total of 28 appearances, tallying 10 goals and four assists. Qualified for 2008-09 UEFA Cup.
2006-07: Featured in 21 games in all competitions and recorded seven goals and four assists. Was one of 50 nominees for the Ballon D’Or, being the first Everton player in 18 years to be named. Qualified for 2007-08 UEFA Cup.
2005-06: Played in 39 games, amassing eight goals and five assists in all competitions. First of four seasons that Cahill played in European competition.
2004-05: In first year with Everton, Cahill was team’s leading scorer in Premier League with 11 goals in 33 appearances. Was named Everton Player of the Season and helped Everton earn a fourth-place finish in the league and a UEFA Champions League berth.
1999-2004: Started English career at Millwall, appearing in 217 games and tallying 52 goals. Helped Millwall earn UEFA Cup spot and berth in FA Cup Final in 2004, when they fell to Manchester United. Previously came from Sydney United.
INTERNATIONAL:
On the international level, Cahill featured in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups as a member of the Australian National Team. He was the first Australian to score a World Cup goal in 2006, when he found the back of the net against Japan, and helped his country earn a spot in the Round of 16. He has earned a total of 60 caps for Australia, amassing 26 goals – three of which came in the two World Cups he played in. Was named to the 2007 and 2011 Asian Cup teams.
