It was cholecystitis all along.
The stomach pains that forced Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe to miss last Saturday’s 1-0 victory away to the Seattle Sounders were diagnosed by doctors as cholecystitis, commonly known as an inflammation of the gallbladder. After consulting with doctors, including the team’s internist, he underwent a procedure to remove his gallbladder on Monday night.
In a club statement, the Red Bulls say they expect the 58-year-old to make a full recovery in the coming weeks.
Backe made the trip to Seattle but stayed in his hotel room after a visit to a local Seattle hospital. Sporting Director and GM Erik Soler provided him text updates throughout the match. The team was led on the field by assistant coach Richie Williams against the Sounders last weekend.
The Red Bulls play next away to Chivas USA on Saturday afternoon; however, the club did not mention who would be in charge of the team while Backe is on the mend.
“In his absence, the squad will be managed by our experienced coaching staff,” the statement read.
