New York's Kandji to miss 8-12 weeks

Mac Kandji

Red Bulls forward Macoumba Kandji will miss up to 12 weeks after having surgery Wednesday to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Kandji, who scored New York's winning goal to defeat the Seattle Sounders on April 3 and end a 27-game road winless streak, suffered the injury in training on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old started all four games for the Red Bulls this season, scoring the one goal. Last season he tallied four goals and added five assists for New York.

Kandji's likely replacement will be Dane Brian Nielsen, who is expected to join the club on loan on Wednesday. The midfielder, who most recently played for Danish second-tier club Vejle BK, will possibly lineup on the left flank, where Kandji played in Saturday's 2-1 defeat of FC Dallas.
