Backe: Key for us is good possession

Red Bulls coach Hans Backe is worried about the side's attack.

CARSON, Calif. – On Thursday, New York Red Bulls manager Hans Backe provided a glimpse as to how the big match against the Los Angeles Galaxy will likely play itself out.

He confirmed the Red Bulls will be concerned more with defending and withstanding what he expects to be early pressure from the hosts.

“[Los Angeles] always come out with a lot of energy and pressing game,” Backe said. “We have to, first of all, not make any unforced errors. We have to play uncompromising when we defend to try to stay in the game for as long as possible.

“If you can stay in the game for 60 to 70 minutes, then you have a chance to win the game in the last 20 to 30 minutes,” the coach added. “They are extremely dangerous on the break. The key for us is having good possession.”

According to Backe, the best form of defense is to keep the ball away from the Galaxy for as long as possible. However, the defensive responsibilities could prove slightly more challenging with the debut of RBNY’s newest right back, as Backe indicated that recent acquisition Carey Talley will likely start in place of regular Chris Albright.

The Swedish manager says that nagging groin and hip issues have necessitated a rest for Albright, who made a successful return this season after injuries kept him sidelined for close to two years. His absence will open the door for Talley, who joins from D.C. United.

“[Talley] has a fantastic attitude and spirit,” Backe said of the 34-year-old. “He is a kind of a leader and he will have to organize our defense.”

Except for one detail, New York’s game plan is seemingly clear. Backe left open the option of potentially challenging the Galaxy’s makeshift center back pairing by adding a second forward alongside Juan Pablo Angel.

Regardless of the personnel Backe selects up top, it won’t change the visitors’ formula for Friday’s match at The Home Depot Center.

“Just take our chances, play as tight and compact a defending game as possible,” Backe said. “I hope that we can score and take our chances.”
