WALDWICK, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls have distanced themselves from rumors linking them to former Brazilian international midfielder Zé Roberto.
Club sporting director Erik Soler said that though the club had spoken with Zé Roberto and his representatives about a possible move in the past, he is not a target right now.
“We’re not going to sign Zé Roberto,” Soler said. “When you look at the balance of our team, we’re not going to sign offensive players.”
The Brazilian was linked to the club several times last year and was seen as an ideal player to provide service to Thierry Henry. However, the recent signing of Norwegian international midfielder Jan Gunnar Solli could mean that the club no longer needs a true creative midfielder.
The Red Bulls sporting director also said two weeks ago that the team will unlikely add a third Designated Player to its roster.
