Red Bulls depart for first preseason trip Friday

Looking forward to spending a few days without several feet of snow, the New York Red Bulls head to Mexico today for a 12-day training trip that will include a match against Mexican First Division team Chivas de Guadalajara.

After two weeks of training inside a dome in snowy New Jersey, the Red Bulls look forward to what they hope will be nearly two weeks of warm weather and sunshine in Cancun. While in Cancun, the players plan to enjoy themselves, but also have their priorities straight.

“Obviously it’s a beautiful place and everyone’s going to enjoy being there, getting away from the weather,” midfielder Austin da Luz said.  “But we’re there to work.”

The trip, which will run from Feb. 4 through Feb. 15, is the first of three that the Red Bulls plan to take this preseason.  The club will also head to Florida and Arizona for training stints, which will include scrimmages against several other MLS clubs.

“(Cancun) is a place known for vacation but this is preseason, this is our job and we’ve got to stay focused over there,” forward Juan Agudelo said.  “We’re getting back into it and just trying to get the players back into physical shape.  That’s our feeling, getting to know new players, and it’s just the way every season starts.”
