Red Bulls Academy Update: May 23

U-18 Red Bulls fall to PDA, 3-0: The Red Bull U-18s suffered a tough defeat over the weekend at the hands of local rival PDA by a final of 3-0. The Red Bulls began the game strong and could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Christian Johnson blasted a shot from eight yards out but the PDA goalkeeper made a nice save. Then in the 15th minute a neat combination allowed Kyle McCord to get in behind the PDA defense. However, he could not control the return pass and the opportunity was lost. In the 38th minute, PDA took the lead and then doubled their lead right before halftime in the 43rd minute to make it 2-0 at half-time.

“The second goal right before half really hurt us today. We knew it was going to be difficult today without Bryan (Gallego), Dan (Metzger) and Brandon (Allen).” (Gallego, Metzger & Allen traveled to Portugal with the USA U-18 National Team). “But I thought we were really flat and PDA made it really hard for us to find any rhythm today,” stated U-18 stand-in captain Sean Davis.

PDA made the score 3-0 late in the second half as the Red Bulls pressed to tie the game.

U-16s beat PDA 3-0 on the road in weekend action: The U-16 Red Bulls played a well-rounded game over the weekend to earn a shutout against rival PDA. The Red Bulls started the game strong after getting a goal from Matt Miazga off a Ross Tetro corner kick. Amando Moreno added to the Red Bulls lead when he finished a headed pass from Freddy Elliot in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Bolu Akinyode played a through ball that Eric Lagg got on the end of and finished to give the Red Bulls a 3-0 early in the second half. Santiago Castano was rarely tested in the shutout victory.

Red Bulls U-15 and U-14 teams clinch Northeast Regular Season titles on Saturday: The Red Bulls U-15 team beat PDA by a score of 3-2 on Saturday to clinch the Northeast Regular Season title. PDA took a 1-0 lead early before Vinnie Brunetti scored for the Red Bulls to tie it before halftime. The Red Bulls scored the next two in the second half on a penalty kick by John Toher and another goal from Brunetti. They held off a late rally by PDA to get the win and clinch the regular season title with a 13-1-2 record.

The U-14 Red Bulls followed up the U-15 by clinching their own Northeast Regular Season title with at 1-1 tie against PDA on Saturday. The Red Bulls controlled the match from the beginning but were unable to capitalize on any of their chances early on. PDA made the most of their opportunity and scored off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Bulls pressed for the equalizer and were rewarded when Chris Lema scored on a 25 yard free kick. The U-14 Red Bulls have one game remaining against FC Westchester on Wednesday night and currently have a 14-1-2 record in the spring season after finishing 14-0 during the Fall.
