HARRISON, NJ (September 3, 2011) – Colombia defeated Honduras in an international friendly at Red Bull Arena on Saturday by a 2-0 score. Forward Teofilo Gutierrez scored both goals for Colombia, converting on a penalty in the 25 th minute before grabbing his second of the game in the 72 nd .
Colombia was the better of the two sides in the early going, and their constant pressure resulted in a number of scoring chances. Just six minutes in, midfielder Fredy Guarin rifled a long-range shot that forced Honduran netminder Noel Valladares to make a tough save. Eight minutes later, Colombia’s Dayro Moreno played a lofted pass into space behind the Honduras defense to Jackson Martinez, but Valladares did well again and made a kick save on a shot from about eight yards out.
In the 24 th minute, Colombia scored the game’s opening goal. Gutierrez was judged to have been fouled in the penalty area, and Colombia was awarded a penalty kick. Gutierrez was the one who stepped up and made no mistake, easily burying his shot into the back of the net.
Honduras’ best chance of the half came off the foot of fullback Maynor Figueroa. Figueroa danced into the center of the box around a number of Colombia defenders, but his shot from 12 yards out sailed just high over the crossbar.
Both teams were reduced to ten men early in the second half. Honduras was first to have a player sent off, as Hendry Thomas was shown his second yellow card of the game in the 51 st minute. They were not at a disadvantage for very long however, as Colombia’s Adrian Ramos was given a straight red card for a reckless challenge just three minutes later.
Colombia doubled its lead in the 72nd minute, and again it was Gutierrez who converted. Moreno got on the end of a cross from the left side of midfield, but his header from inside the box was saved by Valledares. The rebound fell into open space and Gutierrez was the first one there and slammed the ball into the vacant net.
