Long-time Red Bulls defender and New York native Carlos Mendes was selected by the Columbus Crew earlier today in Stage 1 of the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft. Mendes, who began his career with the MetroStars in 2005, made 146 appearances over the span of his seven years in New York, starting in 128. He currently ranks third all time in franchise history in total appearances.

The 30-year-old, who celebrates his 31st this Christmas, made a name for himself as a reliable shutdown defender whose versatility was palpable as both a starter and spark off the bench. Mendes logged close to 12,000 minutes and remained a reliable back during his tenure in New York.

Additionally, Mendes appeared in 11 postseason matches and was on board for New York’s run to the MLS Cup in 2008.

The Red Bulls thank Carlos for his years of service and wish him all the best in Columbus.
