HARRISON, NJ (Oct. 10, 2012) – In a friendly held at Red Bull Arena Wednesday night, Ecuadorian rival clubs C.S. Emelec and Barcelona S.C. played to a 1-1 tie.

The historic game organized by the Ecuadorian Consulate in New Jersey donated all of the ticket proceeds to supporting the Yasuni ITT Trust Fund. For more information about the ITT Trust Fund, please visit: http://yasuni-itt.gob.ec/Inicio.aspx, http://mptf.undp.org/yasuni.

The best chance for either side in the opening half fell to Emelec in the 10th minute, as defender Jose Luis Quinonez latched onto a loose ball outside the box and ripped a shot that beat goalkeeper Damian Lanza and ricocheted off the crossbar.

In the second half, both teams searched for the game’s opening goal. In the 53rd minute, Barcelona’s Juan Carlos Ferreyra had a free look from 15-yards-out and his attempt was held by goalkeeper Cristian Arana. Moments after, Emelec’s Pedro Quinonez headed the ball goalbound, but it was cleared off the line by Barcelona defender Victor Valarezo. With 20 minutes to play, Barcelona defender Miguel Ibarra smashed a free kick that Arana dove to tip over.

Emelec found the back of the net first in the 77th minute. Substitute Marlon de Jesus made a darting run down the right wing to the endline and slid a low cross into the box that Walter Iza one-timed in.

However, Barcelona equalized four minutes later. After Barcelona earned a free kick from 20-yards-out, Damian Diaz stepped up and curled it into the top left corner of the goalmouth.

This Ecuadorian derby was last played in the New York Area 20 years ago, when over 15,000 people saw Emelec defeat Barcelona 1-0 at Downing Stadium in Randall’s Island.
