SANTA CLARA, CA (March 10, 2013) – Despite a first half goal from midfielder Eric Alexander, New York fell 2-1 on the road to the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday evening in the second-straight West Coast match for the Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls (0-1-1, 1 point) return to action for their home opener on Saturday, March 16 at 12:30 PM when they battle D.C. United at Red Bull Arena. For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 17th minute. New York’s Thierry Henry had the ball on the left side of the box and his cross was headed towards the back post by San Jose defender Jason Hernandez. Alexander was free and slotted it into the back of the net for his first goal as a Red Bull.

New York kept the hosts off the scoresheet until the 83th minute, when the Earthquakes equalized. Midfielder Sam Cronin drove through the left side of the box and found forward Adam Jahn, who slammed it off the underside of the crossbar and into the net with his right foot.

San Jose earned a last-gasp winner in the second minute of stoppage time. Red Bulls defender Roy Miller was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Chris Wondolowski’s initial spot kick was saved by goalkeeper Luis Robles, but referee Ricardo Salazar ruled that New York had encroached in 18-yard box, giving the Earthquakes forward another opportunity. Wondolowski stepped up and slid it in the bottom right corner to give San Jose the full three points.
