The New York Red Bulls Reserves fell 1-0 to the Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday night at Legion Stadium.
The Red Bulls first scoring opportunity came from Rafhinha in the 34th minute, as he attempted to get the ball off for a shot in the penalty area, but it was taken away by Wilmington defender Shawn Nicklaw. Throughout the night, the Red Bulls goalkeeping kept the team in the game, as both Ryan Meara and Santiago Castano came up with important saves. Meara denied Hammerheads midfielder Paul Nicholson in the first half, and Castano made a key save off the head of Gareth Evans in the second half.
The lone goal of the night came from Daniel Steres in the 57th minute off an assist from Evans.
New York made several late pushes to tie the game. The best opportunity came when Red Bulls midfielder Marius Obekop ripped a shot that forced Wilmington goalkeeper Troy Hernandez to make a leaping save. Hernandez finished with six saves in the match.
The Red Bulls continued to pressure hard for the equalizer in the last 10 minutes but came up short.
