Forward Abby Wambach broke Mia Hamm’s international career goals record of 158 in front of 18,961 spectators at Red Bull Arena with a four-goal first half performance, as the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Korea Republic, 5-0, in an international friendly Thursday evening.
The United States controlled the match and scored in the 10th minute. Alex Morgan cut it back to Lauren Cheney, who chipped in into Wambach. Wambach was able to turn on her defender and slid it into the back of the net. Wambach nearly doubled her advantage moments later when she was onside and alone on goal, but Kim Jungmi was able to kick the American’s attempt aside.
Wambach doubled her tally nine minutes following her opener with another assist from Cheney. Cheney had possession on the end line and her in-swinger into the six yard box was nodded home by a wide open Wambach, who tied Hamm’s U.S. Soccer all-time record for goals with that tally.
Wambach completed her hat trick and became the international all-time goals leader in the 29th minute, heading in a Megan Rapinoe corner kick for her 159th career goal. The Pittsford, NY native wasn’t finished in the opening half and put in her fourth goal, getting to a Morgan cross first and deflecting it in from close range in stoppage time.
After recording two assists, Cheney tallied a goal of her own in the 64th minute, knocking in a Kelley O’Hara pass to make it 5-0.
