CHESTER, PA (June 23, 2013) – Playing down a man for most of the match, the New York Red Bulls fell to the Philadelphia Union, 3-0, Sunday at PPL Park. New York (7-6-4, 25 points) and Philadelphia (7-5-4, 25 points) are now tied for second place in the Eastern Conference, four points behind leader, the Montreal Impact.

Philadelphia took the lead in the seventh minute. A Union corner kick was cleared out of the box to Keon Daniel and he passed it to Sheanon Williams on the left wing. Williams curled in a cross that Conor Casey headed into the back of the net. Ten minutes later, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles kept the score at 1-0, putting his leg out to block a Jack McInerney close range effort.
The Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute when Lloyd Sam was issued a controversial red card for a challenge on Danny Cruz. Despite being a man down, New York fought back for the rest of the interval and thought it had a goal in the 36th minute when Dax McCarty nodded it in off a Thierry Henry free kick. However, the Red Bulls midfielder was ruled offside.
Both teams had chances to find the back of the net after halftime. Casey forced Robles to parry in the six yard box and Sebastien Le Toux could not knock in the rebound. On the other end, Jonny Steele controlled a Peguy Luyindula feed, turned his defender and put his shot wide of the mark.
The Union doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. Daniel blasted it at Robles and the Red Bulls goalkeeper was able to block it. However, Casey was able to get to the rebound first and slid it home.
With the Red Bulls pushed forward to find a goal and substitutes Fabian Espindola and Andre Akpan coming close to pulling the deficit back to one, Philadelphia completed the scoring two minutes from full time, as Antoine Hoppenot tallied a goal off a Le Toux pass.
