ABOUT THE MATCH

Despite falling to the Colorado Rapids, 2-0, in their last match on Thursday, July 4 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the Red Bulls (8-7-4, 28 pts.) remain in striking distance of first place in the Eastern Conference, trailing the Impact (9-4-4, 31 pts.) by three points and second place Sporting Kansas City (8-5-6, 30 pts.) by two points.

Under first year head coach Marco Schallibaum, Montreal has enjoyed a stellar 2013 campaign led by co-Golden Boot leader Marco Di Vaio, who has 11 goals this season. The Impact started the year losing just once in eight games. However, Montreal is 0-1-2 in its last three and has one win in its last five outings. The Impact is coming off a 1-1 home tie against Chivas USA last Sunday, with midfielder Sanna Nyassi scoring an equalizer in the 80th minute following Eric Avila’s opening goal for the visitors.

The Red Bulls are 1-1-0 against the Impact this year. On March 23, New York lost to Montreal, 1-0, at Olympic Stadium. Di Vaio tallied an early 13th minute goal that would stand to be the game winner. The two clubs met again on May 8 at Red Bull Arena. This time, it would be the Red Bulls to come out on top and even the season series. Henry scored twice for New York, including a highlight reel bicycle kick goal in the 88th minute. The goal won Goal of the Week honors in the 11th week of the season and gave the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead that they would hold onto for the win. New York is 3-2-0 all-time versus Montreal and a perfect 2-0-0 at Red Bull Arena.
