ABOUT THE MATCH

Currently in a second place tie in the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls can move to within one point of first place in the Eastern Conference with a win in their next MLS match this Saturday against Western Conference leader, Real Salt Lake, at Red Bull Arena at 7:00 PM (TV: MSG – Pre-Game Show starts at 6:30 PM; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM).

The Red Bulls (9-7-5) enter this contest having played Toronto FC to a 0-0 tie last Saturday, July 20. They have not surrendered a goal in their past two games, going back to a dominating 4-0 performance against the Montreal Impact on July 13. New York currently sits in a second place tie with Montreal in the Eastern Conference with 32 points, four points behind conference leader Sporting Kansas City.

Real Salt Lake travels to Red Bull Arena coming off of a 2-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City on July 20. The Western Conference leader opened up the scoring with a Robbie Findley goal in the 56th minute, but the momentum shifted to Sporting Kansas City in the 66th minute when RSL defender Chris Wingert was shown his second yellow card and was ejected from the match. Soony Saad scored for the visitors in the 67th minute to tie the game and the hosts surrendered the winning goal in the 97th minute, as Ike Opara headed in a Graham Zusi corner kick.

Despite the loss, Real Salt Lake (11-6-4) remains in first place in the Supporters Shield standings with 37 points.This will be the only meeting of the regular season between New York and Real Salt Lake. These two teams last collided back on March 17, 2012. In just their second contest of the season, the Red Bulls fell to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium, 2-0. It was current Red Bull Fabian Espindola who tallied the go-ahead goal for RSL in the 39th minute and Luis Gil would double his team’s advantage in the 58th minute to close the scoring.The Red Bulls are 3-5-7 versus Real Salt Lake all-time and 3-1-3 at home.
