ABOUT THE MATCH

With both teams having the chance to take first place in the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union square off at Red Bull Arena Saturday, August 17 at 8:00 PM.

The Red Bulls dropped a 2-0 decision to the Columbus Crew on August 10 at Crew Stadium, snapping a four-game unbeaten run (3-0-1). Goalkeeper Luis Robles’ solid performance in goal was not enough to prevent Federico Higuain from scoring twice in the second half to give the Crew the three points. After entering the weekend atop the Eastern Conference, New York fell back into second place with 38 points, trailing leader Sporting Kansas City by one point.

Philadelphia comes to New York after defeating D.C. United at home, 2-0, behind two goals from Conor Casey on August 10. The Union currently sits in in third place in the Eastern Conference with 37 points, one point behind New York. The Union has lost just twice in its last 11 games, going 5-2-4 in that span.

These clubs have already met twice this season, with the most recent contest occurring on June 23, when the Union managed to defeat a 10-man Red Bulls squad at PPL Park, 3-0. After the Union drew first blood in the seventh minute with a Casey header, New York’s Lloyd Sam was issued a red card in the 28th minute for his challenge on Philadelphia’s Danny Cruz and was ejected from the match. Philadelphia went on to score two more goals to snap the Red Bulls’ five-game winning streak against the Union.

In the opening match of 2013 between the two sides, New York won, 2-1, at Red Bull Arena on March 30 with Dax McCarty and Thierry Henry finding the back of the net to give Mike Petke his first ever win as head coach. The Red Bulls are 6-3-0 all-time against the Union and 4-0-0 at home.
