The New York Red Bulls will look to pick up three big points on the road Sunday when they take on Western Conference side Chivas USA at 5 PM ET (Watch live on MSG).
Currently tied with Sporting KC for first place in the East, the Red Bulls know this is the time of year when every match must bring a result. Despite closing out last weekend’s match with a point in a scoreless draw against the Philadelphia Union, players and coaches admitted it felt like a loss. Nevertheless, that unsettled nature and desire to get back out on the pitch to right the wrongs hung with the team throughout the week of training and will carry over with them on the flight out to California.
During a time in the season when teams begin jockeying for playoff contention, a team like Chivas USA will instead be battling for pride. Winless since July 17, a 1-0 win over Toronto FC, Chivas USA has collected just one point over the last four matches. With 18 total points off a 4-14-6 record, the Western Conference club is well outside of the playoff bubble at ninth place.
For Red Bulls assistant coach and former Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser, Sunday’s clash isn't as much of a blast from the past as you might think.
“It’s really not my former team; there are so many players that have changed that it’s an entirely separate group,” Fraser said. “Certainly they are definitely better than their record indicates; they have a lot of good players. They’ve been very, very close to winning - it seems like every week - for the last six to seven weeks.”
That is why the Red Bulls are going into this one like any other match - knowing they can’t take any match for granted, especially on the road.
“They don’t have the best record, but we know that any team can beat anyone in this league,” said Red Bulls defender Brandon Barklage. “So we have to be prepared. I think there’s some areas on the field where we can kind of exploit them, and we’re going to bring a game plan into that, we’re going to stick with it and we feel confident going into [California]. Hopefully we can come away with three points.”
After a tough 0-3-1 road start, the Red Bulls began picking up some positive results beginning with a 2-0 win over D.C. United on Apr. 13. Since then, the Red Bulls have gone 3-3-2 on the road, including wins over Columbus and Sporting KC. Sunday’s match against Chivas is the first and only meeting between the two sides this season.

The Red Bulls return home on Saturday, Aug. 31, to host rival D.C. United in the third and final matchup between the two sides this season. New York will look to take the regular season series after drawing against D.C. in the Mar. 16 home opener, and winning on the road at RFK Stadium on Apr. 13.
