New York’s finest takes on New York’s bravest in the fifth annual Battle on the Pitch at Red Bull Arena, set to kick off Sunday, Sept. 22.
The NYPD and FDNY squads will face off once again following the completion of the Red Bulls’ 5:00 PM match against FC Dallas. Fans are encouraged to stick around and root for either side, but more importantly watch a good match between two competitive teams, all for a good cause.
Proceeds from the match will go toward the Sergio Villanueva Foundation. Prior to his career as a firefighter, Sergio was a police officer and detective for the NYPD and a huge fan of soccer. The Argentinean native was a victim of the horrific Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, where he died alongside fellow policemen and firemen as they heroically did their part to save the lives and protect victims of the tragedy. He is forever remembered for his bravery and devotion to the city, and his love for soccer lives on in the Battle on the Pitch at Red Bull Arena.
