Sunday's 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders didn't guarantee a postseason spot for the New York Red Bulls, but it did shrink the window of ifs, ands or buts ahead of this weekend's action.
Currently sitting at first place in the East and atop the MLS standings off a 15-9-7, 52-point total, the Red Bulls can clinch a playoff spot this weekend under the following conditions:
With a win or tie against New England Saturday
OR
A Chicago tie/loss AND a Philadelphia loss
Three games remain on the Red Bulls schedule; all against Eastern Conference opponents, with two of them scheduled on home turf at Red Bull Arena.
This Saturday's match pits the Red Bulls against the Revolution, a team New York has gotten the better of so far this season thanks to a 1-0-1 record. New England enters the match hungry for a postseason spot, and will without a doubt come in looking for a win to improve those chances.
Prior to this season the Red Bulls had never won a regular season match at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium. That all changed on September 8th when New York posted a convincing 4-1 victory on the road in Texas. They'll look to get a result there yet again on Oct. 20, when the club hits the road for a 5:00 PM road start.
And finally, the Chicago Fire pay a visit to Red Bull Arena on Oct. 27 for the Red Bulls' final regular season match. The two sides have met only once this season, and very early at that, when the Red Bulls finished on the wrong side of a 3-1 result at Toyota Park on April 7.
