RSVP: USMNT VS. GHANA VIEWING PARTY AT RED BULL ARENA
After months of buildup, the U.S. Men’s National Team will finally step on the field to take on Ghana in its first group play match of the 2014 World Cup. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. with ESPN broadcasting the game nationally.
The U.S. went 3-0-0 during the team’s Send-Off series, a final tune-up against the likes of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Nigeria before heading to Brazil. The team scored a combined six goals over the three matches, including a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the team’s final match.
Former Red Bull forward Jozy Altidore scored twice against Nigeria, his first goal for club and country since December 4, 2013. After scoring the first goal, Altidore ran onto a chipped ball over the top from Michael Bradley, cut the ball back onto his right foot and fired home his second goal of the evening.
The U.S. will need Altidore to score if it hopes to advance out of the World Cup’s Group of Death. His goals against Nigeria were an encouraging sign.
From a team perspective, Monday’s match marks the third consecutive World Cup that the U.S. will face Ghana. In 2010, Ghana knocked the U.S. out of the round of 16 with an extra-time goal. In 2006, Ghana sent the U.S. home early as well, earning a 2-1 victory that eliminated the U.S. in the group stage.
Ghana returns seven players from the 2010 team, including Asamaoh Gyan up top, the 2010 goal scorer.
The real question for the U.S. is whether or not its back four is up to the test, especially the center back tandem of Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler. Without a whole lot of experience playing alongside each other, Monday will undoubtedly be their toughest test.
