With the younger age groups wrapping up their Fall seasons last week, the U-16s and 18s had added pressure this weekend to keep the RBNY academy’s undefeated streak going. They had their work cut out for them, hosting bitter foes the Philadelphia Union Academy at the Red Bulls Training Facility. The U-16s squared off in a battle of the top-ranked teams in the nation, and the Red Bulls handed the Union their first loss of the season. The U-18s battled to a scoreless draw in a physical game. Both teams will head to Baltimore next weekend before closing out the month with a USDA Showcase event November 29th and 30th.

The Red Bulls U-18 academy and Philadelphia Union U-18’s battled to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon. The Red Bulls were stymied by an organized Union defense that denied the Red Bulls an opportunity to establish any rhythm in the first half. In the second half the Red Bulls had the better of the possession and were able to create more opportunities, highlighted by an Ethan Lochner header that went just outside the post in the 55th minute. The home team had their best two chances in the final ten minutes. In the 85th minute, substitute Cameron Harr saw his shot from ten yards out saved brilliantly by the Union goalkeeper. Then, in the 89th minute, substitute forward Malcolm Dixon received a pass inside the penalty box and blasted a shot just over the bar from a tight angle. The Red Bulls defense was led by a stellar performance from Man of the Match Kyle Duncan and Matt McCarthy, as well as goalkeeper Tom Lapinas, who recorded his second shutout of the season and lowered his goals against average to a stingy 0.60 for the year.
