Premier Sports Complex, Bradenton, FL
The Red Bulls U-18 Academy recorded a 1-1-1 record at the USDA Winter Showcase this week in Sarasota, Florida. The U-18 side entered with an undefeated record, and faced off with three other undefeated sides.

In the opening game, the Red Bulls gave Indiana Fire their first loss of the season in a convincing 4-1 victory. The Red Bulls got the jump on Indiana in the early moments of the game and went ahead 1-0 in the 5th minute when Kyle Duncan scored from a Derrick Etienne pass. Indiana levelled in the 27th minute when a deflected free kick left Red Bulls goalkeeper Tomas Lapinas stranded and an Indiana Fire player tapped in a loose ball. The Red Bulls regained the lead in the 35th minute on a goal from Etienne. Ethan Lochner and Juan Sebastian Sanchez tallied in the second half to make the score 4-1.

On day two of the tournament, the Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps played to a thrilling 3-3 draw. In a repeat of the first game, the Red Bulls jumped all over the Whitecaps in the opening 15 minutes. In the 7th minute, Duncan again opened the scoring when he volleyed a Chris Flores cross inside the back post. Sanchez scored a brilliant goal in the 13th minute after beating several players and curling in a left-footed shot from 25 yards out. The Whitecaps then found their way back into the game, the levelled the score with goals in the 34th and 42nd minutes. The Red Bulls had several prime scoring chances early in the second half, but saw Vancouver go ahead 3-2 on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Forwards Malcolm Dixon and Sanchez had great opportunities to equalize but both blasted high from close range in the closing minutes of the game. In the 95th minute, goalkeeper ventured forward for a corner kick and scored from a header at the near post to earn the Red Bulls a tie.

A tired Red Bulls side dropped a 3-2 result to the Houston Dynamo academy in the final game of the tournament. A deflected shot in the 12th minute of game saw the Dynamo take the lead. Dixon scored in  the 27th minute to level the score, but Houston took a 2-1 lead in first half stoppage time. New York’s Lochner scored in the 53rd minute with a blast from a tight angle from the left side of the box. Minutes later, a defensive mistake from the Red Bulls allowed a Dynamo player to dribble in on goal unopposed and beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Tomas Lapinas for the game-winner.

“We had a very difficult schedule at the USDA Winter Showcase and are very proud of the effort and character of the boys in the three games,” said U-18 head coach Paul O’Donnell.

“We have learned a lot about our team over the three games at the showcase and we are looking forward to the winter break and getting back some injured players for the spring part of the season. We believe that we can compete with any team in the Academy as our quality and depth has been excellent so far.”
