Scouting Report
New York is coming off of a strong defensive performance against Seattle on Father’s Day that saw their consecutive shutout streak pushed to 407 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal in MLS action. Real Salt Lake tied 2-2 with the Portland Timbers in their last outing on Saturday.
This will be a tough away matchup for the Red Bulls due to Salt Lake’s strong home performance this season, where they have posted a record of 4-0-1, while New York has struggled on the road, mainly during the early part of the season, compiling a record of 1-5-1. New York has never won in Utah, going 0-4-5 since RSL joined the league in 2005. RSL has also posted one of the best home records in the league since 2012, going 43-12-17 in that time period.
The Red Bulls have scored the second-most goals in the league so far this season while Real Salt Lake has scored the third-most, while conceding the sixth-most, so look for some goals to be scored in this game. In the only meeting last season on June 24, Mike Grella scored the lone goal to secure a 1-0 victory at Red Bull Arena.
The Red Bulls are also no stranger to Real Salt Lake goalkeeper, Nick Rimando, who will pass Kevin Hartman for most appearances all-time against New York. Rimando made his first appearance against the MetroStars in 2000 for the Miami Fusion and has since compiled a 14-12-5 record in 31 games, including nine clean sheets.
