The New York Red Bulls continue their four-game road trip with a trip to Columbus to face Crew SC in a rematch of the 2015 MLS Eastern Conference Finals. Kickoff at MAPFRE Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on MSG, MSG GO and Red Bulls Radio on TuneIn.
The Red Bulls look to rebound after having a five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss at Real Salt Lake. New York had won four straight in MLS and also took a victory in the U.S. Open Cup last week, all shutout victories. Wednesday was the first time New York lost, or was scored upon, since May 13, a 2-0 loss to D.C. United.
Gideon Baah scored early for New York on Wednesday, heading home a Sean Davis corner kick in the eighth minute. The visitors hung onto the lead until the 65th minute, and conceded the game-winner off of a deflected shot in the 88th minute.
Several regulars were rested on Wednesday night, notably with captain Dax McCarty getting a rest while Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips entered the game as late subs.
Luis Robles did play, continuing his iron man streak, now at 122 consecutive regular season games. Robles’ shutout streak reached 472 minutes, the longest-such streak in MLS this season.
New York is 6-2-1 over the last nine league games after starting the season 1-6-0. New York is 1-6-1 on the road, but 12-16-4 all-time at Columbus, including winning one of two regular season matchups in Columbus last season.
Columbus enters at 3-5-6, in ninth place in the East. The Black and Gold were not in action during the week, and played to a 0-0 draw against Montreal last weekend. Ola Kamara is the club’s active leading scorer this season with four goals. Kei Kamara had five before being traded to New England in May.
New York is 3-2-1 in the regular season against Crew SC over the last two years.
After Saturday New York has two more road matches next week. The Red Bulls are in Philadelphia for an Open Cup Round of 16 match on Wednesday, June 29, and meet New York City FC for a second time on Sunday, July 3.
New York is next home for a friendly against Liga MX side Club America on Wednesday, July 6, and hosts the Portland Timbers on Sunday, July 10.
