BWP: Where He Ranks Amongst MLS’ Best Scorers

Bradley Wright-Phillips has signed a multi-year contract with the New York Red Bulls and will remain with the club for the foreseeable future.

Since joining the Red Bulls as a trialist in the summer of 2013, Wright-Phillips has claimed every franchise scoring record. He is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer in MLS (70) and across all competitions (78). He also holds franchise records for career hat tricks (4), multi-goal games (16) and game-winning goals (20).

Wright-Phillips, who is in the midst of his fifth MLS season with the Red Bulls, has also begun appearing in the MLS record books alongside some of the league’s best goal scorers of all time.

Currently, BWP’s career Goals Per 90 Min. average of 0.73 (fourth in MLS history) and 0.63 Goals Per Game average (eighth in MLS history) puts him amongst the most efficient goal scorers the league has ever seen.

His 16 multi-goal games ties him for eighth in MLS history, while his four hat tricks are tied as the third most in league history behind co-leaders Stern John and Diego Serna (5).

Wright-Phillips is also listed twice amongst all-time leaders in consecutive games with goals, scoring in six consecutive matches from Aug. 13 to Sept. 18 in 2016, one short of the MLS record. BWP also had five consecutive games with a goal in 2014.

Although Wright-Phillips still has some work to do in MLS’ all-time scoring list, cracking the top 10 is within reach. The Red Bulls forward trails Carlos Ruiz (89 goals, 10th all-time) by just 19 goals, despite playing 72 fewer games.

Altogether, eight out of the top 10 all-time MLS goal scorers have played more than 250 games. If Wright-Phillips finishes this season with at least 20 goals scored, he would climb into the top 10 with less than 150 games played.
