Match Recap: NYRB II Comes Back to Defeat Atlanta United 2, 2-1, with 10 Men

MONTCLAIR, NJ (August 9, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (3-17-3, 12 points) defeated Atlanta United 2 (4-17-4, 16 points) 2-1 on Tuesday, August 9, at MSU Soccer Park.

Red Bulls II was reduced to 10 men following a red card in the 65th minute, and the visitors took the lead three minutes later, as Raimar converted a feed from Luke Brennan.

New York leveled the match in the 82nd minute, as John Murphy played a pass down the far side of the field to Steven Sserwadda, who immediately sent a shot into the back of the net.

Red Bulls II took the lead in the 90th minute, as Sserwadda made a run down the near side of the field and sent in a cross that took a deflection to O’Vonte Mullings, who ripped a shot after collecting the ball.

New York completed the season sweep of Atlanta and has won all three meetings between the sides at MSU Soccer Park.

The goal for Sserwadda was his second of the season. He has scored or assisted a goal in each of New York’s last three matches. Murphy’s assist was his second of the season, both coming against Atlanta.

Mullings’ goal was the first of his professional career.

Following the match, New York will conclude its four-match homestand on Friday, August 12, against the Charleston Battery. Kickoff at MSU Soccer Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage available on ESPN+.
