The hectic game featured an early goal by Juan Pablo Angel, which was immediately erased by two Carlos Pavon goals, both assisted by David Beckham. Clint Mathis scored in the dying moments of the first half to tie the match before halftime, 2-2.
Jozy Altidore extended New York's lead with two second-half goals, only to see Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle both score to tie the match, 4-4. Finally, in the 88th minute, Angel scored the game-winning goal to close the match and send the Red Bulls' record crowd home with a victory.
