Ángel signs multi-year DP contract with LA

NEW YORK – It’s official: The Los Angeles Galaxy announced on Wednesday that the club has signed Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel to a multi-year, Designated Player contract.

The New York Red Bulls’ all-time leading scorer joins David Beckham and Landon Donovan as Galaxy DPs, taking the club to the league maximum of three.

“I’m anxious to start this new challenge in my life and will do my best to bring back another championship to this city," Ángel said in a statement.

POLL: How many goals will Ángel score in 2011?

After New York decided not to renew Ángel’s contract at the end of the 2010 season, the Colombian became eligible for the first-ever MLS Re-Entry Draft, which was introduced with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“I believe that he will play a major role in our success this season,” Arena said in a statement.

Arena was Ángel’s head coach back in New York when the player arrived from Aston Villa of the English Premier League. The former Colombian national-teamer went on to score 58 goals in 102 career regular-season games over four seasons in New York.

“He has been one of the best goal-scorers in MLS over the last four years and I fully expect that he will be a productive and consistent player in a Galaxy uniform," Arena said.

A former Colombian international, Ángel scored nine goals in 33 appearances for his country, making his debut in 1996 at the age of 21.

The Galaxy will hope his streak does not end with his move to the Home Depot Center. After losing top scorer Edson Buddle and trading away Tristan Bowen, Los Angeles have been in the market for forwards.

Arena has since engineered the acquisitions of MLS veterans Adam Cristman and Chad Barrett in two separate trades to bolster their options moving forward.
