Academy’s Metzger, Gallego Earn U.S. U-18 Call Ups

The Red Bulls Academy continues to prove a breeding ground for some of the top rising soccer stars in the country, and the latest set of call ups by the United States Under-18 National Team further demonstrates the Academy’s success. Midfielder Dan Metzger and defender Bryan Gallego were both called up as part of the 20-man roster named by U.S. U-18 Head Coach Mike Matkovich for the squad’s upcoming trip to Portugal. The U-18’s will play three friendlies as part of the Lisbon International Tournament, facing the Netherlands on May 25, Portugal on May 26, and Finland on May 28.

Metzger, a member of the Red Bulls Academy U-18 side, is a central midfielder who is committed to play collegiately at the University of Maryland, following in the footsteps of current Red Bulls midfielder Matt Kassel, who won a national title with the Terrapins. Metzger has featured for the first team Red Bulls, most recently making an appearance as a substitute in the Red Bulls’ friendly with NASL side Montreal Impact on May 11. Metzger, a native of Holmdel, NJ, has also played for the Red Bulls Reserves this season.

Gallego has captained both the Red Bulls U-18 and U.S. U-18 sides in the past. A native of Kinnelon, NJ, Gallego is a solid defender who is committed to play collegiately at the No. 1 ranked and defending National Champion Univeristy of Akron. Along with Metzger, Gallego also appeared for the first team Red Bulls on May 11 against the Montreal Impact, and has featured in Reserve matches this season. Gallego has been with the Red Bulls Academy since 2007.
