RED BULLS CONTINUE ROAD TRIP IN SEATTLE THURSDAY: The Red Bulls play the second game of a four-match road trip on Thursday night when they take on Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field at 10:00 PM ET in a nationally televised showdown (TV: ESPN 2; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).

New York enters the match unbeaten in its last six contests, thanks to a dramatic 3-3 draw with Portland on Sunday night. The Red Bulls looked destined to lose their third game of the year, trailing 3-1 in the second half. But, a goal from Thierry Henry and a Dwayne De Rosario stoppage time penalty earned the Red Bulls a crucial point in the standings. The Red Bulls own a record of 5-2-8, with 23 points, one point ahead of the Philadelphia Union, which hosts Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night prior to the Red Bulls-Sounders affair.

Seattle edged Toronto FC at BMO Field 1-0 on Saturday. The teams seemed headed for a scoreless draw until Seattle forward Fredy Montero scored on a spectacular free kick in the game’s waning minutes. Seattle is unbeaten in its last four matches, earning eight out of a possible 12 points with two wins and two draws during that span. Sounders FC sits in third place in the Western Conference on a record of 6-4-7, 25 points.

Since Seattle joined MLS, the Red Bulls have gone 2-2-1 against the Sounders. In both teams’ season openers earlier this year, New York took a 1-0 win at Red Bull Arena on March 19 with Juan Agudelo finding the back of the net in the second half. Last season, the teams each earned a 1-0 victory over the other on the road. On April 3, 2010 at the previously-named Qwest Field, New York rode a Macoumba Kandji first half goal to victory. In the return fixture on May 15 at Red Bull Arena, Montero came off the bench to score the game’s lone goal late in the second half. Of the five goals the Red Bulls have surrendered to Seattle all-time, Montero has notched four of them.

NEW YORK-SEATTLE CONNECTIONS:
Sounders FC defender Jeff Parke was drafted by New York with the 60th selection in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. Parke played with the club until 2008, and his 132 regular season appearances ranks fifth on the club’s all-time list. Seattle selected Parke in the third round of the 2008 MLS Expansion draft, but did not sign with the team until the 2010 season after a one year stint in Vancouver.

Sounders FC Technical Director Chris Henderson spent the final season of his 11 year Major League Soccer career with the Red Bulls in 2006. That season, Henderson played in 32 matches, starting 29, and registered three goals and one assist. Sounders goalkeeper Terry Boss spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the Red Bulls, but did not appear in a regular season match. Taylor Graham of Seattle was a member of the Red Bulls in the 2006-07 seasons. During his stint in New York, the defender played in 15 regular season games, making 9 starts and registering one assist.

RED BULLS SQUARE OFF AGAINST EASTERN RIVAL CHICAGO FIRE SUNDAY: The Red Bulls take on the Chicago Fire in an afternoon tussle on Sunday at Toyota Park (2:00 PM ET; TV: ESPN2, Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).

The Fire comes into the match with a record of 2-4-9, 15 points. They have allowed just one goal in their last four matches since interim manager Frank Klopas took over for Carlos de los Cobos. In its last match, Chicago earned a point against New England in a 1-1 draw at Gillette Stadium. Former Red Bulls forward Dominic Oduro notched the Fire’s goal, which was canceled out by Revolution striker Rajko Lekic in the second half.

All-time against Chicago, New York holds a record of 11-20-7. Last season, the Red Bulls earned a historic victory over the Fire, as they defeated Chicago 1-0 in the first ever MLS match at Red Bull Arena on May 27, 2010. Joel Lindpere’s 40th minute strike held up as the game winner. The teams met up again on Aug. 8, 2010 at Toyota Park, a match that ended in a 0-0 draw. The match marked Designated Player Rafa Marquez’s Red Bulls’ debut. The two teams will also play on Aug. 13 at Red Bull Arena.

NEW YORK-CHICAGO CONNECTIONS: Chicago goalkeeper Jon Conway spent four seasons with New York from 2006-09. He ranks third on the club’s all-time wins list for goalkeepers, earning 23 during his New York career, and is second on the all-time shutouts list with 17 career clean sheets. The Rutgers University product was acquired prior to the 2006 season from San Jose for a fourth round draft choice. The club dealt him to Chivas USA following the 2009 season.

Fire goalkeeper Alec Dufty had brief stint with the Red Bulls in 2009, appearing in one match, logging 82 minutes in a 0-0 draw at the Houston Dynamo on April 11, 2009. Also a member of the Red Bulls for a short time in 2009 was Fire forward Dominic Oduro, who appeared in three matches, starting one. Oduro was acquired prior to the 2009 season from FC Dallas, with the clubs swapping draft choices while Dave van den Bergh was sent to FC Dallas. Later in the 2009 season, the Red Bulls shipped Oduro to Houston for a 2010 first round draft choice, and a 2011 second round draft choice in the MLS SuperDraft. The Red Bulls used the first round selection in that trade to take Austin da Luz with the 14th overall pick in 2010. With the 2011 second round choice from the Dynamo, the Red Bulls selected John Rooney.

RED BULLS EARN 3-3 DRAW IN WILD AFFAIR AT PORTLAND: Dwayne De Rosario’s 96th minute penalty kick conversion helped give the New York Red Bulls a 3-3 tie against the Portland Timbers in a wild encounter. New York’s Austin da Luz recorded his first ever MLS goal and assist, while Thierry Henry also found the back of the net, as the Red Bulls rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a point in front of 18,627 spectators at a sold out JELD-WEN Field. With the result, New York took the outright lead in the Eastern Conference, improving to 23 points off a 5-2-8 record and extending its MLS unbeaten run to six.

The Red Bulls were energetic to start the game and their efforts paid off in the sixth minute. Henry one-timed a da Luz pass from the center of the park to find a streaking De Rosario on the left wing. De Rosario slid it towards the top of the box to an open da Luz, who took a touch past a Portland defender and slotted it in with his right foot from near the penalty spot.

The Timbers came back into the match by finding the back of the net twice within the opening five minutes of the second half. First, in the 48th minute, Jack Jewsbury collected a Red Bulls clearance outside of the box and ripped it past New York goalkeeper Greg Sutton and into the back of the net. A minute later, the hosts took the lead and Jewsbury this time was the provider. The midfielder swung in a free kick from the left side that Eric Brunner nodded down to Kevin Goldthwaite, who used his heel to knock it home from close range

Portland nearly notched a third as a Brunner’s header was bound for goal, but New York midfielder Teemu Tainio acrobatically volleyed it off the line. Jewsbury later forced Sutton to dive to his left to parry his attempt away.

The Timbers doubled their advantage in the 68th minute. Forward Jorge Perlaza raced down the right wing and knocked it into the six-yard box. New York defender Stephen Keel tried to clear it but slid it into his own net.

Henry brought the Red Bulls within one again five minutes later. The Frenchman started the play with a run with the ball from the center of the park. He eventually dished it to da Luz, who gave it right back to him in the box. Henry looked it up and rifled it in with his left foot for his eighth goal of the season.

Portland had a chance moments later to score their forth when Sutton was adjudged to have taken down Perlaza in the box off a breakaway. However, Jewsbury’s ensuing spot kick clanged off the right upright.

With the visitors looking for the game-tying goal, they went down a man in second half stoppage time when Henry was shown a red card for an alleged altercation with a Timbers player. Despite playing with 10 men, the Red Bulls found a last gasp equalizer in the last play of the game. A failed Timbers clearance fell to De Rosario, who rushed to the endline and swung in a cross that hit the arm of Portland’s Rodney Wallace. De Rosario stepped up and powerfully struck it past a correctly-guessing Troy Perkins to give New York the point.

RED BULLS SIGN DEFENDER MIKE JONES: Red Bull New York signed defender Mike Jones on June 18. He was on the 18-man matchday roster in the Red Bulls’ 3-3 draw at Portland on Sunday.

“We are excited to sign Mike, as we wanted to bring him in to see if he can provide depth to our left back position,” said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We look forward to tracking his progress with us this season.”

Jones, a left-footed defender, was selected by Sporting Kansas City as the 28th overall selection in the 2011 MLS Supplemental draft on Jan. 18, 2011, before being waived on May 5. He did not make any MLS appearances for Kansas City, but played in one reserve league match.

The St. Peters, MO native played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for four years, being named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team in 2010 while playing 60 games during his college career, notching six goals and two assists. In his senior year, Jones and the Cougars were runners-up in the MVC Tournament. Jones faced the Red Bulls in a reserve match while playing for the Columbus Crew as a guest player on May 30 at Montclair State University.

HENRY TIED ATOP MLS IN GOALS SCORED:
Red Bulls captain and forward Thierry Henry helped the Red Bulls comeback to earn a 3-3 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday, scoring his eighth goal of the season in the 73rd minute to pull New York to within one. Henry’s eight goals ties him with Los Angeles Galaxy attacker Landon Donovan for the league lead in the 2011 Golden Boot race.

2011 MLS GOALS LEADERS
Player (Team), Goals
T-1 Thierry Henry (NY), 8

T-1. Landon Donovan (LA), 8
3. Charlie Davies (DC), 7
T-4. Chris Wondolowski (SJ), 6
T-4. Brek Shea (DAL), 6
T-4. Eric Hassli (VAN), 6

DA LUZ NOTCHES FIRST CAREER GOAL, ASSIST: Red Bulls midfielder Austin da Luz scored his first career goal on Sunday against the Portland Timbers, opening the scoring with a fourth minute goal. Da Luz then recorded his first ever MLS assist on the Red Bulls’ second goal, when he set up Thierry Henry with a nifty feed into the box. Da Luz, who was drafted by the team in the first round (14th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, made his Red Bulls debut this season on May 28 in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver. He has started each of the Red Bulls’ past three matches.

BACKE RECORD STILL INTACT: With their stunning two-goal comeback on Sunday at Portland, the Red Bulls remained unbeaten under head coach Hans Backe when they score the first goal of a match. In 2010 and 2011 combined, New York has posted a record of 19-0-6 in games where they opened the scoring.

DE RO’S EQUALIZER LATEST IN A MATCH IN CLUB HISTORY: Dwayne De Rosario’s 96th minute game-tying goal was the latest equalizing goal in club history. Previously, the latest equalizing goal in franchise history came in the 95th minute on two different occasions. Mike Magee scored in the 95th minute on Sept. 28, 2003 at D.C. United to level the game at 1-1. Two years later, Amado Guevara scored in the 95th minute on Aug. 21, 2005 against Chivas USA, capping off a hat trick in a 3-3 draw. That match marked the last time before Sunday that the Red Bulls trailed by two goals in a match and came back to tie.

RED BULLS’ TWO GOAL COMEBACK: The Red Bulls’ came from two goals behind to draw the Portland Timbers 3-3 on Sunday. It was the first time the Red Bulls came back from two goals down at the 70th minute mark to tie or win since July 12, 2003 at New England. The Revolution led the match 3-1 at the 70th minute mark before a 73rd minute own goal and a Ricardo Clark strike in the 76th leveled the match at three.

HENRY AND RODGERS BEST SCORING DUO:
The forward tandem of Thierry Henry and Luke Rodgers is the top scoring duo on Major League Soccer so far this season, as the two have combined for 13 so far in 2011. Henry tallied his league-leading eighth goal of the season on Sunday at Portland, and Rodgers, who missed the match due to injury, has five goals in his first season in New York.
