With a 2-1 win over Auxerre, Montpellier simultaneously claimed its first Ligue 1 title and punched their ticket to the Trophee des Champions match against Lyon at Red Bull Arena.
The July 28, 3pm ET meeting between the two sides marks the first time the competition will be hosted on U.S. soil.
“We are very proud to organize the 2012 Trophée des Champions in USA, especially here in New-York”, said Ligue de Football Professionnel President Frédéric Thiriez in the Apr. 23 announcement. “Soccer becomes bigger and bigger in North America and we expect to promote our championship in USA. I remember last season’s game in the city of Tangiers, Morocco. Olympique Marseille has won Trophée des Champions 5-4 against LOSC after a tremendous game. In 2012, I am sure that both clubs will do their best to offer a magic moment in the beautiful Red Bull Arena because Trophée des Champions is not a friendly game : it’s the first official match of the season and one of the 4 trophies a club can win in France. Aside the game, we are very proud and confident to have such a great partner as ComCast-Spectator, that will allow us the best promotion and implementation we could dream of”.
“We are very excited to host the 2012 Trophée des Champions – a prestigious match with an illustrious history of fantastic soccer,” said New York Red Bulls President, Business Operations Chris Heck. “Red Bull Arena is the top soccer stadium in North America and we are proud to welcome two fantastic French teams to the United States for the first time in the competition’s history.”
The Trophee des Champions stands as the launching point for the upcoming French soccer season.
Tickets for the match are available on Red Bulls Ticket Central or by calling 877.RB.SOCCER.
