ABOUT THE MATCH

The Red Bulls hope to earn three points for the second time this season following its 2-1 victory on March 30 over the Philadelphia Union when they take on D.C. United. United played a tight match in a 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City away from home last Friday. Currently with four points off a 1-3-1 record, United’s sole win came on March 9, when it beat Real Salt Lake at RFK Stadium, 1-0. Designated Player Rafael and forward Lionard Pajoy have accounted for the two goals United have scored this year, while D.C. boasts other threats including 2011 MLS Most Valuable Player Dwayne De Rosario and midfielder Chris Pontius.

This is the second time this year that the Red Bulls and United have faced off. In New York’s home opener on March 16 at Red Bull Arena, despite outshooting United, 24-4, the Red Bulls settled for a scoreless 0-0 tie. Last season, the Red Bulls went 1-1-1 in regular season action against United, tying 2-2 on Aug. 29, 2012 at RFK Stadium in New York’s last trip to the nation’s capital. New York is 20-31-9 all-time versus D.C. and 9-18-4 on the road.

The teams are vying for the annual Atlantic Cup, the trophy given to the club that earns the most standings points in the series between the two sides. United took the cup back from New York last season (D.C. led in goals scored in the series – the first tiebreaker) after the Red Bulls held it for two-straight years.
