ABOUT THE MATCH

Just one point from first place and coming off one of the most entertaining games of the MLS season last Saturday at Red Bull Arena in a 4-3 Red Bulls win, New York faces Eastern Conference leader, Sporting Kansas City, on Saturday at Sporting Park at 6:30 PM ET in a top of the table clash (TV: NBC Sports Network; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM).

New York enters this contest coming off of a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Western Conference leader Real Salt Lake on July 27 at Red Bull Arena. Fabian Espindola’s penalty kick in the 89th minute knotted the match at three and Dax McCarty netted a diving header off of a Brandon Barklage cross in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give the Red Bulls the lead and the three points. The Red Bulls currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points in a tie with the Montreal Impact, just one point adrift of Sporting Kansas City.

Sporting KC comes into Saturday having been defeated by the Impact 1-0 on July 27 on a 96th minute Blake Smith goal. Prior to Saturday’s loss they had put together a six-match unbeaten streak (4-0-2), dating back to a June 22 draw with FC Dallas.

These two clubs last met on April 17 at Red Bull Arena in a contest that saw Sporting Kansas City walk away with the 1-0 win. Aurelien Collin scored the game’s only goal in the 13th minute when he nodded in Graham Zusi’s corner kick.
