Red Bulls Sign Australian International David Carney

HARRISON, NJ (August 8, 2013) – The New York Red Bulls announced today that they have signed defender/midfielder David Carney. Carney, 29, will be added to New York’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate and passing a team physical.

“David is an experienced international player, who can play on the left side both as a defender and a midfielder, and he provides us much needed cover,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “He is versatile and athletic and has competed at a high level. We are pleased to bring David to New York and look forward to his contribution as a member of the Red Bulls.”

Carney, who was most recently with Uzbekistan’s FC Bunyodkor, started his career with English side Everton, where he competed in academy and reserve sides. In 2005, Carney joined A-League club, Sydney FC and helped his side qualify for the Club World Championship. It was in 2006 when Carney earned his first call-up to the Australian National Team. Carney made a total of 33 appearances and tallied seven goals for Sydney FC.

In August 2007, Carney signed with England’s Sheffield United, where he played until 2009. He also had a loan stint at Norwich City in 2009 and later in the year, moved to Dutch First Division side, FC Twente, helping his team win the Dutch League title for the first time in club history. Carney also played for England’s Blackpool (2010-11) and Spain’s AD Alcorcon (2011-12) before joining Bunyodkor.

As a teammate of current Red Bull Tim Cahill, Carney has earned 46 caps for Australia and scored six goals. He was part of the Socceroos’ 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2007 and 2011 Asian Cup squads.

New York hits the road to take on the Columbus Crew on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Crew Stadium at 7:30 PM ET (TV: MSG; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). The Red Bulls’ next home contest is on Aug. 17, when it battles the Philadelphia Union at 8:00 PM at Red Bull Arena. Tickets are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto
