ABOUT THE MATCH

With three regular season games remaining and having the most points in Major League Soccer, the Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls will look to clinch their 10th postseason berth in 11 years when they host the New England Revolution on Saturday at 7:00 PM at Red Bull Arena (TV: MSG; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM).

New York can book its place in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs with a win or a tie against New England. Alternatively, a Chicago Fire tie or loss against D.C. United on Friday and a Philadelphia loss versus Toronto FC Saturday would also secure New York’s spot in the playoffs.

New York extended their unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1) following a 1-1 tie against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field Sunday evening. Despite going down 1-0 following a Brad Evans penalty kick conversion, the Red Bulls came back with a strong second half performance and were rewarded with Tim Cahill’s ninth goal of the year in the 76th minute to earn a crucial road point. The draw lifted New York to 52 points off a 15-9-7 record and extended the Red Bulls’ lead atop the Eastern Conference to four over second place Sporting Kansas City. The Red Bulls also enter the week in first place in the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, one point ahead of Seattle and Real Salt Lake.

New York hosts New England, which is currently in the race for a playoffs spot. The Revolution moved to 11-11-8 and 41 points under head coach Jay Heaps following a 1-1 tie against the Houston Dynamo last Saturday at Gillette Stadium. New England enters the week in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with the Columbus Crew, just one point adrift of the fifth and final playoff spot currently held by the Philadelphia Union.

New York is 20-26-14 all-time against New England and 16-8-7 at home, including 4-0-0 at Red Bull Arena. In regular season play, the Red Bulls are 1-0-1 against the Revolution in 2013, winning 4-1 at Red Bull Arena on April 20 and tying 1-1 on May 11 at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution did knock the Red Bulls out of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 4-2 victory at Harvard Stadium on June 12 in the tournament’s fourth round.
