HARRISON, NJ (May 21, 2014) –New York Red Bulls midfielder Jonny Steele has been called up by Northern Ireland for a pair of friendlies in South America on May 30 and June 5.

Northern Ireland will face Uruguay in their capital city of Montevideo on May 30 before heading to Valparaíso to take on Chile. Uruguay and Chile will be participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Steele will hope to earn the second and third international caps of his career after coming on as a substitute in the 67th minute of a November 2013 friendly against Turkey. He has also represented his country at the youth levels when he participated in the 2005 UEFA European U-19 Championship, hosted by Northern Ireland, and participated in all three group stage matches against Germany, Serbia and Montenegro, and Greece.

The midfielder has still appeared in all but one of New York’s 14 matches this year, while also starting five games including the Red Bulls’ most recent against Toronto FC. This season, he has recorded one goal and two assists. Over his two-year career with the Red Bulls, Steele has made 44 appearances, including 37 starts, and has scored six goals and assisted on eight others. During last year’s Supporters’ Shield-winning season, Steele made 32 starts in his 33 appearances.
