RBNY Academy Update | May 7: Another undefeated weekend as the kids notch six victories -

Red Bull U-18's (1) at NJSCA (0)

Sunday May 3, 2015 at St. John Vianney High School (Holmdel, NJ) - The Red Bulls U-18s recorded the shutout win on the road behind a goal from Walter Calderon in the 83rd minute.  The Red Bulls struggled to find the net in a feisty game while NJCSA made things difficult for the Red Bulls with a very organized defense that was difficult to break down. At half-time, the Red Bulls brought on Calderon who made an immediate impact with several dangerous runs on the right wing.

“"The majority of the game was in our control,” said man of the match Matt McCarthy. “Defensively we were very solid, and it was a matter of time before our team scored, Walter made a difference in the game when he came on. I think we did a good job limiting NJCSA as they only had some chances on set pieces, but none were converted. It was a good game and we are looking forward to a great week of training in preparation for our next game against FC Delco."

The deadlock was finally broken in the 83rd minute. Midfielder Gideon Metrikin slipped a pass to Calderon who blasted a left footed shot from 15 yards out into the upper corner. Goalkeeper Xavier Kennedy who was brought up from the under 16's recorded the shutout win in his 4th consecutive start with the under 18’s. The Red Bulls return to action next weekend with a doubleheader.

On Saturday May 9th, the Red Bulls host FC Delco at Red Bull Training Facility (12pm kick-off). Red Bull U-16's (2) at NJCSA (1)

Sunday May 3, 2015 at St. John Vianney High School (Holmdel, NJ) - The Red Bulls U-16s started off a busy month of games in May with a hard fought away victory against NJ rivals NJSCA.

The Red Bulls U-16 controlled possession early in the game but struggled to create chances against a well-organized NJCSA defense. It would take a special moment from Omir Fernandez to open up the scoring after eleven minutes when he created space inside the penalty area and finished from a tight angle into the far corner.

The Red Bulls would have to wait until the 51st minute to get their second. Two excellent tackles from man of the match Kazu Shigenbou on the edge of the NJCSA penalty area caused the ball to fall to Brian Saramago inside the NJSCA penalty area. Saramago picked out Zach Ryan at the far post, Ryan showed excellent technique to finish from a tight angle placing the ball back across the goalkeeper and into the far corner to record his fifth goal of the season.

“No game on the road is ever easy, especially against such a resilient team as NJCSA,” said Kazu after the game. “Though we were missing key players, we were still able to grind out a win, through a hard fought team effort. We now have to focus on our preparation for next week's game as we look toward academy playoffs in June.'

The same attacking combination nearly made it 3-0 when a powerful run and cross from Brian Saramago, this time from the left side, was inches away from been converted by Zach Ryan who came sliding into the six yard box but could not connect to finish it off a good attacking move.

NJCSA pushed hard to get back into the game and were awarded a penalty with four minutes remaining to make the score 2-1 and set up for a nervous few minutes. But the Red Bulls backline held firm to record the road victory.

The Red Bulls next game will be at home against FC Delco on Saturday 9th May at 2:30PM

However, it wasn't long into the 2nd half before the Res Bulls would add another after a tremendous run from Jordan May down the left side led to a goal that was comfortably tucked away by forward Leo Hecht.  NJCSA continued to bunker in as they did the majority of the game but could do little to prevent the Red Bulls from scoring a 3rd goal from midfielder Dylan Sullivan midway through the 2nd half.
