HARRISON, N.J. (January 6, 2016) – New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles and Homegrown center back Matt Miazga have been called into January camp with the United States Men’s National Team, U.S. Soccer announced today. The camp commences on January 10 in Carson, California.
Robles earns his first look with the national team since 2009 after a year spent rewriting the Red Bulls’ franchise record books. Robles was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year after setting new club marks for single-season wins, career wins and career shutouts. Robles recorded all 18 of New York’s league wins in 2016, more than any other goalkeeper in 2016, and extended his iron man streak to 106 consecutive league starts and full 90 minutes played for the Red Bulls, the second-longest such streak in league history.
Robles was also named the goalkeeper for the MLS Best XI. He became the club’s all-time shutouts leader in August with back-to-back shutout wins over New York City FC and Toronto FC. He became the franchise’s all-time wins leader on October 18, earning his 49th career win for New York in a 4-1 win over Philadelphia. Robles finished the year with 50 career regular season wins and 28 shutouts for New York.
Robles has appeared once for the USMNT, a 2-2 draw against Haiti in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Miazga, a product of the Red Bulls’ academy, had a breakout season in 2015. Miazga played himself into an everyday starting role, and the Red Bulls went 15-6-5 during the regular season with him in the lineup on the way to earning a second Supporters’ Shield in three seasons. Per Opta, the 20-year-old led New York, and finished third in MLS, with 113 aerials won. Miazga was also sixth in the league with 185 clearances, including 113 headed clearances, third-most in MLS.
The Clifton, N.J. native also climbed the international ranks in 2015, going from a starting position with the U.S. Under-20 side at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in June to his first senior cap as a substitute against St. Vincent & The Grenadines on November 13 in St. Louis.
Miazga was named U.S. Soccer’s Young Male Player of the Year after his impressive 2015 season.
During the January camp, based out of the StubHub Center in Carson, the United States will face Iceland on January 31 and Canada on February 5.
