Scouting Report

The New York Red Bulls aim to bounce back from consecutive losses on Wednesday in their first of two road games this week.

Bradley Wright-Phillips leads the Red Bulls in shots with 23, including 11 shots on goal, but has been unable to find the back of the net so far this season. Last weekend against Sporting Kansas City, Wright-Phillips took 10 shots, landing four on target. The former MLS Golden Boot winner will hope to end his scoring drought on Wednesday night.

Chris Duvall made his first start at center back on Saturday in a shift that head coach Jesse Marsch praised as, “for the most part very good.” Despite losing a one-on-one battle with Dom Dwyer, which led to Sporting KC’s second goal, the natural right back put in a strong 90-minute performance and could be tasked with another start at center back against the Earthquakes.

Connor Lade put in another strong performance at left back for New York against SKC. The wingback was solid on the night, defending Graham Zusi and transitioning the team into attack. Lade even got forward to record five shots and nearly found the back of the net on multiple occasions. Expect much of the same hard-working, passionate defending on Wednesday.

Finally, Felipe is cleared to make his return to the Red Bulls lineup after serving a one-game suspension for a red card against the New England Revolution. The midfielder leads New York with two goals and will bring some added creativity to the Red Bulls attack.

For the Earthquakes, former MLS Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski will be the focal point of the San Jose attack. The forward has scored four goals this season and is a poacher in the penalty box. The New York defense will need to prevent him from getting on the end of crosses and shut him down in and around the penalty area to keep him off the scoresheet.

Another danger-man for the Quakes is forward Quincy Amarikwa. The 28-year-old is the team’s assists leader with three helpers and has proven his ability to score from anywhere on the field. Last weekend, he assisted both of San Jose’s goals from Wondolowski and midfielder Alberto Quintero. If allowed time and space to operate, Amarikwa has a way of making opposing back lines pay the price.
