New York Red Bulls settle for draw in Toronto; extend unbeaten streak to 12 games

TORONTO (September 18, 2016) – The New York Red Bulls tied Toronto FC, 3-3 at BMO Field on Sunday evening. A Toronto own goal followed by two from Bradley Wright-Phillips was enough to earn New York a point on the road.

With the draw, the Red Bulls improve to 12-9-9 on the season and remain in second place in the East, tied on points but above New York City FC on goal differential. The result also extended New York’s franchise-record unbeaten streak to 12 games.

New York opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when Felipe delivered a low-driven cross through the six-yard box that was tapped in by Toronto’s Steven Beitashour.

Wright-Phillips doubled the advantage in the 31st minute, thanks to a turnover forced in the final third of the pitch after pressure by Daniel Royer. In a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, MLS’ leading scorer made no mistake and chipped Alex Bono for the 2-0 lead.

Toronto was able to pull one back before halftime thanks to Michael Bradley, however, Wright-Phillips was quick to score his 20th goal of the season in the 48th minute, assisted by Sacha Kljestan and Alex Muyl. The helper was Kljestan’s 16th assist of the season, the most in MLS.

With the second goal, Wright-Phillips became the first player in league history to record two 20+ goals seasons. The Englishman tied the MLS single-season record with 27 goals in the 2014 campaign.

Jozy Altidore scored in the 68th and 86th minutes to tie the game for Toronto and earn a point for the home side.

The Red Bulls return home to host the Montreal Impact on Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m. (TV: MSG, MSG GO, Radio: Red Bulls Radio), before traveling to Guatemala to close out Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League group play with a match against Antigua GFC on September 27.
