The New York Red Bulls and NYCFC begin the fourth season of the New York Derby rivalry at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, May 5 with kickoff set for 2 p.m. ET.
Here’s five reasons to attend Saturday’s rivalry match:
It’s Derby SZN
Every year the New York Derby serves as the biggest match of the MLS season for both sides of the rivalry and with Saturday’s match on national television (ESPN), all eyes will be on which color New York ends up being for the weekend.
If Bradley Wright-Phillips had to choose a favorite team to play against in MLS, we’d guess it’d be NYCFC. New York’s all-time leading scorer has notched 10 goals and one assist in the nine times the two sides have squared off. With BWP’s splintering start in 2018 with eight goals and eight assists in all competitions, expect to see his name on the scoresheet at the end of the match.
Maintain Series Edge
New York Red Bulls dropped the season series to NYCFC in 2017 going 0-2-1 against them in MLS play but hold the all-time series advantage with a 5-3-1 record, not counting 2017’s U.S. Open Cup win over them. A win Saturday will further the gap in keeping New York red.
Kaku’s First New York Derby
Coming off a dynamic performance and MLS Team of the Week nod in Los Angeles, where he scored the game-winning goal as well as assisting two others, Kaku foresees himself playing a big role in his first New York Derby. Kaku is no stranger to Derbies and Clasico’s having been a part of many in his native Argentina facing the likes of River Plate, Boca Juniors and chief rival San Lorenzo. He’ll be ready.
Revenge on the Mind
Different types of superstars (BWP vs. Villa), different playing styles and different types of coaching philosophies (Marsch vs. Viera) are set to clash at Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Jesse Marsch knows the pendulum swung in New York City’s direction last season but sees an opportunity in Saturday as an opportunity to cement their place atop MLS’ contenders. "It’s a chance to prove to ourselves that we’re a good team, we’ve made good progress and that we’re ready for big challenges."
