New York Red Bulls II approach Saturday’s match against North Carolina FC needing a positive result if they want to book a fourth-straight trip to the USL Playoffs.
NYRB II head coach John Wolyniec has seen his side in a similar position before, as recent as 2017, and has confidence his team will respond in a good way, as they look to earn their first road win of the season.
“Our backs are up against the wall a little bit, Wolyniec said. “But the guys have responded in a pretty good way, so hopefully we gain some confidence from that and from keeping a team like Nashville off the scoreboard for so long down a man. I think that blends itself well for us, hopefully we gain the confidence from that and come into this game and put out a good performance.”
Wolyniec spoke knowing a result can only be had down in North Carolina if his side is crisp and sharp on the day in every facet of the match and also with a bit of luck.
“We are going to have to be sharp in what we do, Wolyniec said. “We got to be sharp with our press, because if we start running up on them, they are able to play through and they have guys that can really punish you. We are just going to have to be sharp and tuned in, ready to go and ready to put in the effort we have put in over the last few weeks and hopefully we get a little more lucky.”
Coaching a side with a majority of them being first-year pros straight out of college or the Academy, the biggest strides in development take shape when the situation is tough.
“I mean that’s why we spend the money on this team, Wolyniec said. “It is to get into these situations where the games mean a lot. That’s when the most development happens, when you are tested in a real way and when your back is up against the wall. How do guys both, can we see how guys react, then learn how to deal with those situations?”
