Wolyniec: ‘This Is The Most Competitive Year We’ve Had’

The United Soccer League (USL) is getting stronger with each passing season, according to New York Red Bulls II Manager John Wolyniec.

“It seems like every year they add teams and usually those teams coming in are aggressive and want to put good sides together,” Wolyniec said.

Ahead of the 2018 season, Atlanta United FC 2, Fresno FC, Las Vegas Lights FC, and Nashville SC joined the league as expansion teams.

“Certainly, this is the most competitive year of the four we’ve had and for us to still get in at fifth place is a pretty good achievement,” Wolyniec said.

Additionally, North Carolina FC and the Indy Eleven moved from the National American Soccer League (NASL) to play in the USL this season.

Wolyniec said that it seems like the money being spent on players in the league has also risen. “We put a lot of resources into this team and what we want are good, hard, tough games,” he said. “To see other clubs keep upping the ante in the league I think is a good sign for the league itself, but also for us and how we use this team and the games that we can get from it.”
