NYRB II 2018 Year in Review: Hassan Ndam

New York Red Bulls II defender Hassan Ndam took big steps in his second professional season helping NYRB II reach the Eastern Conference Final for the third-straight season.

On top of being nominated for USL Young Player of the Year and placing 16th in USL’s 20 Under 20 list in 2018, Ndam anchored the backline and led the team in multiple defensive categories.

In his 29 games started and 2600 minutes played with NYRB II, Ndam led the team in clearances (127) and aerial duels won (111). He tallied his second and third career goals.

Ndam made his MLS debut against the Columbus Crew SC on July 28 and also featured in New York’s two U.S. Open Cup matches against NYCFC on June 6 and the Philadelphia Union on June 16.

Ndam was rewarded for his breakout season at the international level after the USL playoffs concluded, earning a call up to the Under-23 Cameroon National Team Olympic side. Ndam was in the 18 for both African Cup of Nations Olympic Qualifying matches against Chad.

Best Goal: July 6 vs. ATL UTD 2 in the 71st minute of a 6-1 win.

Best Performance: October 27 vs. FC Cincinnati in Eastern Conference Semifinals. 1-0 win.

NYRB II head coach John Wolyniec had this to say about Ndam’s impressive season:

“Credit to him, I think last year we saw a lot of growth and in the beginning of the year. As the season went on you could see him doing everything he needed to get better and taking on information and allowing us to challenge him in a lot of different ways. You can see that Hassan has really taken some steps and then obviously he gets on the field with the first team a couple times this year and gets a little taste of that and does pretty well with it against the likes of David Villa and some other guys. He’s got tools that a lot of other center backs desire, and certainly we feel like he has tools that fit in what we’re trying to do and it’s just a matter of him continuing to embrace the idea of us challenging him and him challenging himself to be at his best at all times.”
