USL Post-Game Reaction: John Wolyniec

New York Red Bulls II Manager John Wolyniec

Opening statement...

Yeah, it’s great to get the season kicked off, it was a nice day for us, a great day to be at Montclair Park for our first home game at Montclair to open up the season. Good result for us, I thought for the most part we played really well and created a lot of chances. We didn’t give up much except for the second half of the first half. It’s nice to get off to a good start like that and then unfortunately we’ll have to take a break next week.

On if his team could have scored more...

We tend to create a lot of chances and not always finish at a high rate – just the style of play a little bit. First game of the season, you don’t feel the game legs under you and sometimes that little bit throws you off. You have to give credit to the goalkeeper, he made some good saves too, so just a combination of a couple things. Early season jitters or whatever and then the goalkeeper makes a few saves. I can take that in the first game, I think that’s fairly normal and obviously if it’s a persistent problem then we’ll have to figure out ways to deal with it, but certainly look at it and see what little things we could have done better, but I think it’s fairly normal.

On his halftime message...

I told the guys it wasn’t about tactics, it wasn’t about anything other than our response after scoring, so I felt like right after we scored, we gave up two chances after not giving up really any in the first twenty, twenty-five minutes. I think we thought the game would get easy and it got harder. A lot of times that happens after you score, but for us especially it can be an issue, so that was basically my only message. So I was pretty hard on them, and then our response in the second half was pretty good. We went after the game in a good way and our response after with the goals that we scored in the second half were much better, so that’s a good sign.

On Buckmaster and Nealis...

I thought Rece was very good, he did a lot of things we wanted tactically, joined the attack in some good ways at times, very alert and aware, he made some intelligent plays. Sean Nealis is a guy that has been somebody that’s been really good in the preseason and already stepped on the field for the first team. I think he kind of had to learn his way through a little bit this game and wasn’t at his best, but he’s a guy that we highly value around here, so it was good to see those guys get off to a pretty good start.

On Marcus Epps and playing time with NYRB II...

It’s always hard to tell, our first team has off this weekend, so that probably adds a few guys with us that might not be with us regularly, but that’s how we use it. Guys that need games from the first team are going to get those games when they need them and play our young guys and try to get the minutes to help them develop. We’re going to use it with academy guys as well. We’re going to use this team as much as we can, the minutes to me are extremely valuable and there’s a lot of thought that goes into each position, player, and minute that’s given and we’ll do what we have to through the year to figure that out.

On Jared Stroud in the midfield...
Yeah, he’ll be a big part of things. Obviously Vince [Bezecourt] is with us, Vince is probably going to have some some time with the first team as well, so Jared’s going to have a big part of this team. We knew Flo [Valot] was going to come off at halftime and Jared was going to come on at half, so just one of those game when he has to sit for a little bit, but I definitely forsee him being a big part of this team as we go.

On playing Stroud’s strengths...

Yeah, I think Jared did well on the outside for us last year and we definitely have plans for him to play more at the ten and be inside. Some of that will depend on whether we have Vince or not, some of that will depend on what formation we’re playing. I think we try and get guys that are fairly flexible and play different positions. We sometimes consider those three guys underneath the striker as all tens anyway, so I think he’ll be central a decent amount this year.
