USL Post-Game Reaction: John Wolyniec | 5/10/19

New York Red Bulls II Head Coach John Wolyniec

On the performance against Ottawa…

I thought it was a good performance. To go on the road and play at 10:30 in the morning is a little off putting, but I thought our guys started in a really good way, even though we gave up an early goal. It is never easy to come back on the road, whatever 90 minutes to get back, for us to continue to believe and for us to continue to keep pushing the game, it is not easy. It would have been easiest for us to say, hey it is an early game, we loss Tom Barlow, it would have been easier for us to say we made a good effort, but we lost 1-0, but we kept pushing. When you have that mentality, it is never a surprise when results start to go your way, so really good overall performance.

On how important the point was…

Early in the season, it is still early in the season, I think it is just more of a confidence builder, that even on the road when we are down, we are in the games and have a chance. When you have that belief and you get those types of results in the season, it kind of just builds into the core of the team and the feeling of confidence in the group. It kind of just adds to the belief that we have a good team, good players, and that we are going to be able to get results. Does that point matter at the end of the day? It may or it may not, I do not know, but it is more important to have the feeling of getting those points to know that they are in reach at all times. I think that is the thing that adds the most and at the end of the day, that might help our team, but it really is help for the player, each individual to be able to have those feelings. I remember last year when things were going okay for us and we were a little bit indecisive, we had a couple results on the road that were ties that felt like wins and that really boosted us, and it propelled us into the playoffs. I felt like that was the type of result that we got yesterday, and we really gained a lot from it.

On Sebastian Elney’s performance…

Great. It is not easy to have Tom, Brian, and Mathias on that role. Sebastian has not been getting many reps there, so for him to step up and on short notice, the shift that he was able to put in was great. Again, certainly he has some little things to work on and we will continue to work on that stuff, but again the way he stepped up, I think it was a big deal. There is no wonder that the last place, when he makes that hard run to the near post, that it frees up space for Jared, even though he does not touch the ball, it is still a play that helps us to get a result in a tough situation. I have to give him a lot of credit.

On Preston Kilwien subbing in for Nealis…

Preston did well. I was on the sideline encouraging him to move, because I think Preston has a great left foot and I felt like there was opportunity in, and no wonder we ended up getting a chance late in the game from the left side. I was just trying to get him to be a little bit more urgent, and getting him into the game, feeling that he can make a difference even from centerback, so again not easy to come off the bench at centerback ever, especially at half. I think he did pretty well with that, and the reason why he is here is because we value of bunch of things in him and he needs to continue to work and improve on some things, but there are some qualities there that we really like.
